CRISIS TEXT LINE

Overview

As Creative Director at Crisis Text Line, I led a comprehensive transformation of the organization’s creative ecosystem and digital experience. The objective was clear: evolve the brand into a more impactful, scalable, and performance-driven system that could better serve texters in crisis, while also supporting broader organizational goals across donor growth, volunteer recruitment, and brand credibility.


The Challenge


Crisis Text Line had built strong awareness around its core service, but several gaps limited its full potential:

  • A fragmented visual identity across channels and teams 
  • A website experience that lacked clarity, urgency, and optimized user flow 
  • Limited scalability of creative assets across cross-functional needs 
  • Under-leveraged opportunities to engage donors, volunteers, and partners 
  • A need to balance empathy-driven storytelling with performance marketing 


The organization required a unified creative system and a modernized digital platform that could drive both emotional connection and measurable outcomes.

Approach

Establishing an Evergreen Creative System


We developed a new creative strategy centered on an “evergreen” approach—designed to scale across time, platforms, and audiences.

  • Introduced a refined visual language rooted in urgency, empathy, and impact 
  • Defined consistent use of color, typography, and photography to reinforce emotional clarity 
  • Built modular design systems and templates for cross-functional use 
  • Ensured adaptability across social, web, partnerships, and internal communications 

This created a foundation where creative was no longer reactive—but structured, intentional, and scalable.


Elevating the Brand Narrative


We evolved the brand archetype toward a more “Hero” positioning—one that empowers both the organization and its audience.

  • Shifted messaging from purely reactive crisis support → to empowerment, prevention, and leadership in mental health 
  • Highlighted real impact, data, and human stories to build credibility 
  • Positioned Crisis Text Line as both a lifeline and a thought leader in the mental health space 


Website Redesign & Optimization


Led the creative direction and UX evolution of the Crisis Text Line website, focusing on accessibility, clarity, and conversion.

Key Enhancements:

  • Re-architected user journeys to better serve three core audiences: 
    • Texters in crisis 
    • Donors 
    • Volunteers 
  • Launched centralized content hubs
  • Improved UX/UI systems: 
    • Simplified navigation and information hierarchy 
    • Optimized mobile-first experiences 
    • Strengthened SEO structure and content discoverability 
  • Integrated urgency-driven design: 
    • Clear CTAs for immediate support 
    • Reduced friction in accessing help 
    • Visual hierarchy aligned to crisis behaviors and needs
